Sumak Huasi

Sumak Huasi means “nice house” from the indigenous thinking means to share and disseminate culture further integration perspective.

Day 1

Arriving at Napo Cultural Center, you have the outstanding chance to step onto the aboriginal territory of the kichwa Añangu community, whose members will welcome you with a traditional and refreshing ice cold “wayusa”, the local hotel manager will give quick instructions and immediately will take you to your comfortable room with views of the rainforest in order to get ready for the first activity in the afternoon. Hike along “Playas” trail to experience amazon wildlife for the first time in the river islands and shores amidst of one of the most biologically diverse places on Earth. Kayaking is also available as an optional activity for around 45 min. to enjoy an overwhelming and colorful sunset in the vastness of Napo River. Then head back to your cabin, rest a little bit and be prepared for a well-deserved dinner. After dinner sleep with the relaxing sounds of the amazon.

Day 2

Enjoy the sunrise at breakfast, visit the sustainable community projects, talk about the worldview Kichwa Addition to medicinal and walk in the Mama-Kuna road, excellent opportunity to see more wildlife, ceiba trees, strangler, bamboo cane, vines and shrubs endemic from Yasuní.

In the afternoon after a delicious local lunch paddle around “Añangu” stream, a black water ecosystem where you can spot monkeys jumping from tree to tree, caiman and sometimes even giant river otters trying to catch fish.

After dinner, prepare your flashlight for a night walk around the lodge to see different kind of insects, reptiles and even nocturnal mammals like the night monkeys.

Day 3

Early breakfast and then head in the motor boat to one of the highlights of Yasuni Biosphere Reserve, the parrot clay lick in the riverside of River Napo, bring your binoculars and camera lenses to see flocks of blue-headed, yellow- crowned parrots and even dusky-headed parakeets, from the boat.

Then walk around 30 min, through “pericos” trail to reach the blind in the forest with a direct view to the amazing parakeet clay lick, which brings visitors face to face with up to 11 species of parrots and parakeets (including parrotlets and macaws), sometimes even mammals like howler monkeys, tapir and peccaries come to this place to drink water and get vital minerals for their body.

We end this morning with a visit to the intercultural interpretation center «Kuri Muyu» which means golden seed in native language, handled by the women of the community also knows as “mamakuna” learn about the kichwa culture, crafts, customs and traditional use of natural resources directly from the people of the aboriginal community.

We return to the center of the community to have lunch at the dining hall and take a break in the lodge before hiking one hour in order to climb up the observation tower reaching 35 meters above the surface with high chances to spot a variety of birds, howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, toucans, parrots and sloths.

Time for dinner followed by a unique activity at Napo River, onboard the ancestral catamaran to know more about their legends and traditional chants, while women grill some delicious snacks in the fire.

Day 4

Wake up with the chirping of Amazonian birds, to enjoy our local and organic breakfast buffet. After this, put on your rubber boots to start hiking the terra-firme forest at “Samona” trail, where you can feel like “Indiana Jones” in the middle of century- old kapok trees, spot capuchin, woolly and saki monkeys, look under the leafs to spot bizarre insects and tune your eyes and ears for the birds, monkeys and reptiles among the dense forest. Return to the eco-lodge for a refreshing drink and prepare for an exquisite lunch, including local specialties.

In the afternoon after a delicious local lunch, visit our second canopy observation tower to see more of the 600 hundred species of birds with specialized telescopes for wildlife watching.

Upon arriving you will have time to settle back and prepare for a traditional typical dinner to taste local flavors of the amazon, such as “maito” which is grilled fish wrapped in a “bijao” leaf and if you have an adventurous palate try the grilled worms of the “chonta” locally known as “chontakuru”.

Day 5

To close with a flourish, take part on the optional “wayusada” ritual, in which at dawn around 4:30 am is the time when the kichwa family share together the sacred “wayusa” and has been a way to past their ancient knowledge to the new generations, here you also share traditional chants and have the chance to “interpret dreams” with the wisest “mamakuna” at the community, a mystique experience indeed.

Then head back for breakfast, while our staff pick you luggage for your return to Coca town, onboard our comfortable motor boats for the last chance to appreciate the Ecuadorian rainforest landscape, until you reach “La Mision” river port.

The Napo Wildlife Center & Napo Cultural Center offers high comfort accommodation and quality services, distinctive and personalized, with an integrated complex prepared to fully respond to the guests’ needs; this is the main touristic offer in the Ecuadorian Amazon Region, allowing its clients a rare and complete experience, full of privacy and exclusivity.

The project consists in 16 independent cabins, in the form of small eco friendly houses with very nice areas (allows up to 3 guests) with location scattered around the Anangu Kichwa village, with a privileged view over the forest; all the building materials invoke nature – wood and vertical gardens. It also features restaurant, bar and souvenir shop.

Environmentally friendly, promotes physical and spiritual experiences, moments of leisure, individually and within groups, both inside and outside the village; a concept that emphasizes the qualities of life and nature, ecology, water, land, leisure, health and well-being.

With 16 ample and comfortable cabins, the lodge accommodates a total of 48 people, distributed in suites, doubles and triple rooms. Our fully equipped cabins feature electricity, ventilation water and a private bathroom, with a balcony and hammock surrounded by beautifully groomed natural gardens. The restaurant, serving local, and international food, has a maximum capacity of 60 people.

Añangu Kichwa Community: Activities at Yasuní National Park and Añangu are coordinated by members of the local Kichwa community and it is important that their rules of conduct and ethics be respected.

Birdwatching: These activities usually last 2 hours and are carried out in the morning at around 6 A.M.

Rowing: Small canoe navigation is carried out on rivers and streams; larger canoes are used to navigate the Napo River and are included in our routine activities, all of which feature community and naturalist guides.

Swimming: Swimming is safe when carried out at sites your guide have suggested.

Kayaking: Enjoy a level II kayak activity at napo River, from the village for around 45 min. until you reach the observation tower.

Hikes: Our programs include easy and medium intensity walks and hikes in order to observe the wildlife and nature of the area; more difficult hikes and longer programs can be arranged.

Catamarán Ancestral Kichwa: At night we will sail along the Napo River in a boat that emulates the ancestral kichwa trade, where we will enjoy magical stories and legends while tasting some delicious roasted snacks heated on the stove.

Typical Traditional Dinner: Enjoy the Kichwa ancestral cuisine, taste the delicious flavors of maito made with fish, prepared in a leaf of “bijao”, accompanied by fried cacao and exquisite “mayones” or “chontacuros” (palm worms).

Refresh yourself with exquisite manioc chicha, a beverage made of manioc fermented with sweet potato and hygienically prepared for the most demanding palates of our visitors.

Food: Food service is based on combining local, national and international cuisine. The varieties of exotic fruits and organic products are a special. Hot beverage such as tea or coffee is available all day.

Waste Management: All waste is classified and separated into organic and non-organic.

Alternatively or Solar Energy: Through solar panels are devices that use the energy of solar radiation used to generate electricity by photovoltaics implemented in the community and Napo Cultural Center from this year becoming a sustainable tourism and management model.

  • Please walk just in the marked paths, don’t try to wander by yourself, because you could get lost in the forest.
  • Don’t throw any kind of garbage in the path; always use the garbage cans.
  • Please don’t feed or touch any animal, don’t cut or step in the plants.
  • Use headphones, when listening to music in your personal devices
  • Don’t use your camera flash.
  • Hunting fishing is not allowed.
  • Taking videos and photos of the community homes is not allowed. (Ask for permission in advance to coordinate with our staff)

  • Camera/video gear (if using film, lower ASA for open areas (50 or 100), higher ASA for forest (400 and up). [24 hour electricity (110v) is available for charging batteries and digital equipment.
  • Two or three pairs of lightweight long pants.

  • One or two pairs of shorts (mostly for around the lodge).
